Skin Structure
The hypodermis is a supportive tissue that stores and restores energy, ensuring thermal isolation for our bodies. The middle layer, the dermis, is composed of numerous proteins such as collagen, elastin, proteoglycans, and glycoproteins. This tissue provides the skin its biomechanical properties, such as deformation, elasticity, and compressibility.
On the surface of the skin is the epidermis. The epidermis is an epithelium, a stack of numerous cells called keratinocytes. Keratinocytes can rapidly increase the depth of the epidermis, allowing the epidermis to become very closely joined and strong. This builds the barrier function that is needed to efficiently protect our skin and our bodies from pollutants, viruses, and bacteria.
3 Main Factors
Because the skin is an external structure, it is exposed to several factors, including biological, environmental, and lifestyle factors, all of which cause the skin to age.
BIOLOGICAL FACTORS
The lives of both women and men are heavily impacted by hormones. In females, significant fluctuations of hormones can produce very strong consequences on the entire organism. These fluctuations can come from events such as puberty, pregnancy, post pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause.
The dermis and epidermis are affected by each hormonal variation or absence. On the surface, sebum production is directly linked to testosterone, which can decrease with age resulting in dry skin. Hormone depletion can directly alter collagen production, resulting in wrinkles, dehydration and thinner skin.

UVA & uvb
UVAs are responsible for oxidative stress and overflowing of natural cellular defenses. They induce direct damage to DNA, degradation of enzymes, break down matrix fibers (collagens, elastins, etc.) and cause premature aging. This results in a loss of firmness and an increase in wrinkles. UVBs are also responsible for oxidative stress and direct DNA damage, and can cause inflammation, sunburn, and alteration of the epidermal barrier which can lead to dehydration.
AIR POLLUTION & PREMATURE AGING
Pollution sources are numerous: organic, chemical molecules, or particle matter. All of these pollutants can affect the skin’s hydration and consequently promote premature aging.
